Laikipia Aquatics Make Early Plans For Next Year’s Junior Nationals in Nanyuki
Nanyuki, Kenya – The countdown has begun. For the first time in history, the Kenya Aquatics National Junior Swimming Championship will splash down in Nanyuki come August next year, with Laikipia County Aquatics Association taking the reins as host.
Determined to stage a seamless and memorable event, the Laikipia Aquatics Executive Committee, under the stewardship of Chairperson Omar Omari, held a special meeting over the weekend. The session, described as both strategic and spirited, charted the path forward for what promises to be a landmark occasion in Kenya’s swimming calendar.
One of the immediate priorities is forging strong local partnerships. The committee resolved to map out all potential sponsors within Nanyuki and deliver proposals well ahead of time. This proactive approach is designed to secure vital resources and ensure businesses in the region have a stake in the championship’s success.
The committee underscored the need for the competition program to be released early, giving coaches, athletes, and families the certainty they need to plan effectively. To complement this, training sessions for technical officials will begin in December, reinforcing the quality and credibility of officiating at the event.
In April, a Local Organizing Committee (LOC) will officially be formed. This team will steer day-to-day preparations, lay down a detailed timeline of activities, and ensure no detail is overlooked before the first race whistle sounds.
Facilities are also getting a major boost. St. Christopher’s School Nanyuki has committed to heating its pool in readiness for the championship, while the construction of a new half Olympic-standard pool at Braeburn School Nanyuki is already underway. Together with the existing Brickwoods facility, Nanyuki is emerging as a hub of swimming excellence. Excitingly, Three S Academy in Nanyuki has also announced plans to put up an Olympic size standard pool, signaling a bright future for aquatic sports in the region.
Beyond infrastructure, Laikipia Aquatics is also strengthening ties with neighbors. The committee warmly welcomed the formation of the Isiolo County Aquatics Association, pledging to collaborate closely to grow the sport in Isiolo and the larger northern region.
Closer to home, local swimming powerhouses, Gold Fish, Braeburn, Falcon, Gators, Brickwoods, Nanyuki Seals, Genesis, St.Christopher’s, Dolphins, Waldorf, Immaculate, received official endorsement for their outstanding work in developing young athletes. Their thriving programs have been credited with raising the bar for competitive swimming in Laikipia.
Speaking after the meeting, Chairperson Omar Omari struck an optimistic note:
“This is a historic moment for Laikipia and Nanyuki. Hosting the National Junior Championship is about more than just competition—it is about creating opportunities, building capacity, and inspiring the next generation of swimmers. With new facilities, strong partnerships, and the commitment of our local clubs, we are confident Nanyuki will rise to the occasion and deliver an unforgettable championship.
As Nanyuki prepares to host swimmers from across the country and beyond, excitement is already building. With multiple pools in play, a growing network of competitive swimming clubs, and the backing of Kenya Aquatics, Laikipia has set its sights on not just hosting, but setting a new benchmark for junior swimming championships in Kenya. The stage is set, the lanes are being marked, and the journey to August next year has already begun.
