Ugandans Claim Kenyans Must Fall during the Upcoming Regional Swimming Showdown

The waters of Nairobi will not be calm this October. From the 16th to the 19th, the 10th Africa Aquatics Zone 3 Swimming Championships will dive into action, and the spotlight is firmly on the fierce rivalry between Uganda and Kenya.

Uganda comes in with their heads high after beating Kenya in the last four championships. Their camp is brimming with confidence. One senior Ugandan coach spoke with fire:
“Kenyans must fall. We have beaten them four times in a row, and this year will not be any different. Our training is sharper, our swimmers are ready, and we will rule the pool again.”

He added that Uganda’s rise is no accident. Years of focus and hard work have made them the aquatic hub of East and Central Africa.

Kenya, however, has its own story. Once the giants of swimming in the region, they lost ground during years of bitter leadership wrangles that stalled progress and wasted an entire generation of swimmers. Uganda took advantage and dominated.

Now, with the championship on home soil, Kenya is desperate to show the tide is turning. A coach from Kajiado hit back:
“This is our home. Kenya Swimming is on a new path. We have world-class coaching, adopted high-performance training, and fresh energy at the clubs. The wrangles hurt us, but that chapter is closing. Kenya is rising again.”

He pointed to recent reforms, including the ASCA certification program led by U.S. legend Sarah Holman, as signs of real change. The message: Kenya may have stumbled, but it is ready to put its house in order.

Tanzania also enters the picture as a dangerous rival. Dar es Salaam was one of the first cities to adopt high-performance training programs in the region and their swimmers now look ready to upset the balance.

Other countries—Zimbabwe, Somalia, Malawi, Sudan, Eritrea, Burundi, Rwanda, and more—will also be in Nairobi, making the championship a true continental clash.

The Uganda-Kenya battle is fierce, but it is also a story of respect. Both sides admit they push each other to higher levels. This rivalry has become the heartbeat of African aquatics in Zone 3.

Will Uganda tighten its grip, or will Kenya rise from the ruins of its past and reclaim the pool?
