United by Water: Eritrea’s Entry Sets Stage for Africa’s Grandest Swimming Championship in Kasarani

Eritrea has officially confirmed participation in the 10th Africa Aquatics Zone 3 Swimming Championship, to be staged from 16th to 19th October 2025 at the Kasarani Aquatic Stadium in Nairobi. This latest confirmation comes hot on the heels of Nigeria’s entry, further boosting anticipation for what promises to be a historic championship.

According to Omar Ali Omari, Technical Director at Kenya Aquatics, the Nairobi event is on track to become the most attended Zone 3 meet in history, with more than 15 nations expected.

“This shows the confidence other nations have in Kenya’s organizational capacity and infrastructure. The successful hosting of CHAN 2025 gave our country a major milestone, and as swimming fraternity, we must carry that euphoria forward,” Omari stated.

The championship will also host top Africa Aquatics officials, with Dr. Diop Mohammed, President of Africa Aquatics, confirmed as the chief guest. Kenya has additionally revealed plans to bid for the inaugural Africa Aquatics Masters Swimming Championship, buoyed by the growing momentum of masters swimming in the country.

Team Kenya is leaving no stone unturned in preparations. Head Coach Abdulmalik Abdulmalik revealed that the technical bench is analyzing individual swimmer performance in close consultation with club coaches.

“We are laying strong strategies to ensure the trophy stays here at home. We seek the support of all stakeholders so we can give our athletes the very best,” Abdulmalik noted.

Meanwhile, George Munene, Liaison Officer at Kenya Aquatics, emphasized the need for government support and partnerships with private sponsors. He confirmed that several companies have already shown interest in backing the event to elevate both swimming and brand visibility.

“We are appealing for government funding to give our athletes the best conditions. We also plan to further improve the facelift of Kasarani. Most importantly, we call on Kenyans to turn up in large numbers and cheer for our swimmers,” said Munene.

In a symbolic show of national pride, the Kenyan swimming team is also expected to receive a flag-off ceremony at State House, presided over by President William Ruto. The Kenya Kwanza administration has been lauded for its growing commitment to sports development and nurturing young talents.

With Eritrea’s entry strengthening the lineup, Nairobi is set to witness a powerful showcase of continental swimming talent. The atmosphere promises to blend athletic excellence with national pride, as Kenya positions itself not only as a competitive swimming nation but also as a trusted host for Africa’s premier aquatic events.
